Mapping of Location/Geographical Codes for year 2001 and 2011
as provided by Census of India

As per 2011 Census, the Location Code Directory has provided unique codes on All India basis which can be used for various e-Governance purposes. The continuous coding convention used, within India, is as described below:

1. The State code: 2digits
2. The District code: 3 digits
3. The Sub-district code:5 digits
4. The Village code:6 digits ( range - 000001 – 799999)
    The Census Towns and Out Growths (OGs) which are treated as urban for census purpose have also been included in the Rural Directory.

5.The Town code: 6 digit ( range - 800001 – 899999)(only statutory towns)

Any new addition, merger or split of a geographical entity will create a new number for the corresponding geographical entity. For example, for State, it is (35+1), for District, 640+1, for Sub-district, (5924+1) , and for Village (645571+1) and Town(804042+1)
