As per 2011 Census, the Location Code Directory has provided unique codes on All India basis which can be used for various e-Governance purposes. The continuous coding convention used, within India, is as described below: 1. The State code: 2digits2. The District code: 3 digits 3. The Sub-district code:5 digits 4. The Village code:6 digits ( range - 000001 – 799999) The Census Towns and Out Growths (OGs) which are treated as urban for census purpose have also been included in the Rural Directory. 5.The Town code: 6 digit ( range - 800001 – 899999)(only statutory towns) Any new addition, merger or split of a geographical entity will create a new number for the corresponding geographical entity.
